Philip Rosenthal was one of the great German entrepreneurs, a visionary of the 20th century and an outstanding patron of design and the arts. In 1950 he joined the Rosenthal AG, in 1958 he became Chief Executive Officer, and from 1981 to 1989 he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board. In 1990 he was appointed Honorary Chairman. Rosenthal was also member of the managing board of the International Designzentrum (IDZ) in Berlin, chairman of the Bauhaus- Archiv in Berlin and president of the German Design Council. In 1981 he received the Große Verdienstkreuz der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Federal Cross of Merit, Germany). Philip Rosenthal promoted design and the arts within the company like a publisher "for the various original, creative artists of our time". The Rosenthal Studio-Houses that he conceived in 1960 were the first design chain- stores worldwide (Dumont Design-Lexicon), with the Gruppe 21 he had started a design initiative that operated on a cross-company base.
